In keeping with my earlier post, where I told you how to make a puff stitch, I wanted to provide a free pattern that I came up with using this stitch. As I said, it's one of my current favourites. I even stopped using it for a while because I was making up orders, but I have come back to it. My community has a yearly Pumpkinfest so I wanted to create something cute for the kids to have. Generally you see lots of children with little knitted pumpkin hats and I thought that the puff stitch could make a very interesting hat. This is what I came up with. |
Pumpkin Puff Stitch Hat
I used bulky yarn (Willow Burrow and Bernat Softee Chunky) and a 6.50/K hook.
This hat is worked in rounds. For this pattern there is a ch 1 space after each puff stitch.
Size: 4-7 years, child
Abbreviations
ch - chain
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
puff stitch - yarn over, insert hook into stitch draw up a loop 4 times, yarn over draw through last 2 loops
Begin with a magic circle
R1 - ch 1, (puff stitch, ch 1) 4x into the center ring, pull ring closed, join with a sl st to ch 1 sp after 1st puff stitch (4 puffs)
R2 - ch 1, 2 puff stitch, ch 1 in each ch 1 space including the sp you joined into, join with a sl st to the ch 1 sp after 1st puff stitch (8 puffs)
R3 - ch 1, puff stitch ch 1 into same sp, 2 puff st ch 1 into next ch 1 sp, *puff st ch 1 into next ch 1 sp, 2 puff st ch 1 into next ch 1 sp, rep around, join with sl st into ch 1 sp after 1st puff stitch (12 puffs)
R4 - ch 1, puff stitch ch 1 into same sp, puff stitch ch 1 into next ch 1 space, 2 puff st ch 1 into next ch 1 sp, *puff stitch ch 1 into next 2 ch 1 sp, 2 puff st ch 1 into next ch 1 sp, rep around, join with sl st into the ch 1 space after first puff st (16 puffs)
R5 - ch 1, puff stitch ch 1 into same sp, puff stitch ch 1 into next 2 ch 1 spaces, 2 puff st ch 1 into next ch 1 sp, *puff stitch ch 1 into next 3 ch 1 sp, 2 puff st ch 1 into next ch 1 sp, rep around, join with sl st into the ch 1 space after first puff st (20 puffs)
R6 - R10 - ch 1, puff stitch ch 1 into same sp, puff stitch ch 1 into each ch 1 space around hat, join with sl st into the ch 1 space after first puff st (20 puffs)
Change to brown or Fasten off and attach brown yarn
R11 - ch 1, sc in same sp and each st around , join with sl st into first sc (20 sc)
R12 - ch 1, hdc in same sp and in each sc around, join with sl st into first hdc, fasten off weave in ends (20 hdc)
Stem
Begin with magic circle
R1 - 3 sc into center of ring
R2 - desired height - continue sc's in each st around until desired height. You can also join at the end of each round, but it's easier to just keep single crocheting. When you fasten off leave a long tail for sewing your stem to your hat.
Tendril
ch 10, start sc in 2nd ch from hook
For a super curly tendril work 3 sc in each ch, for a nice curl that hangs a bit lower work 2 sc in each ch.
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing and add to the top of the hat near the stem.
Accents
I have added a heart to this hat for a little girl. Other alternatives are to add leaves for decoration or perhaps even a bow. The options are endless. You don't have to add anything, it's just a suggestion.
I hope you enjoy this hat as much as I do.
Happy Hooking!
