Remember mood rings? They used to change colour and whatever it changed to told you what mood you were in? Mine was always that blue green colour, or dark blue. Either way, according to that ring I was always in a good mood. Sure mood ring, you keep telling me that.
Right about now you're likely thinking, what on earth does this have to do with crochet?! Well, I was stumbling around online the other day, likely Facebook or Pinterest, and I found this totally amazing concept! A Crochet Mood Blanket! What an awesome idea! How come I can never come up with these things? It was actually started by Stacey Wentworth Hall. What a genius!
So, how do you make one? The rules are super easy, just crochet a square or stripe each day to reflect the mood you're in. Didn't I just tell you how to make a granny square on Tuesday? Now you know why!
First things first, you need to pick the colours you'd like to match the mood you may be feeling. Now, if you're anything like me, this first step is... not difficult, but it can be time consuming. I mean , come on... there's so many colours! Not to mention how many moods I can go through in the span of 5 minutes, let alone a whole day! Here is what I came up with. I figure that I can add colours that aren't listed if I'm having a day where I feel something strongly i.e. pride (for one of my kids).

You may have realized that 365 isn't exactly an even number, so how are going to go about making this blanket? In my case I'm going to do 380 squares (19x20 - I show my rough draft in this post). Others are only doing 360 days and still others are doing one square for each week. Here are my first few squares.
My squares are smaller because I know that I'm going to have a few to work with... only 380! They also aren't sewn together yet because I'm trying to figure out if I want to do a border between the squares that helps it to look a little more finished when the project is done. Then, with so many colours to chose from for the squares, I need to figure out what colour I want to do my border. Decisions, decisions! You may also be wondering what I'm going to do with the extra squares. Since I'm doing a border around each square I'm going to make squares that are placeholders. Here is a rough diagram of what I have planned:
Currently, my squares are being held in a freezer bag. I'm keeping track of what colour goes where in a binder so that I can reference it later. I have even added some background to each day so I can remember why I felt that way. I have no idea if I'll keep the writing when I'm done but it's helping for now. There is also the join as you go option. When you're done you can sew the squares together to make it easier at the end of the year.
But, when the blanket is all together how will you know which square was Jan 1? Maybe you could mark it with something. I'm thinking a different coloured border, or maybe the outer round could be a different colour. I'm sure I'll think of something.
I'm excited to see how this turns out. I have even roped my mother in law into doing it as well. It's mostly to keep myself accountable, but we'll both have something awesome at the end of the year. If you think you'd like to do this there is a great Facebook group here.
Are you the fence about doing a mood blanket but you like the concept of adding a little something each day? What about a weather blanket? You can keep track of the highs and lows for each day or week.
Your turn:
What do you think of this idea?
What are some colours you would have in your blanket and what would they mean?
